Why add sugar to real fruit smoothies?

You may ask, "Isn't real fruit sweet enough; why add sugar to a smoothie?" We add Turbinado sugar, which is sugar in its natural form, to give our smoothies that rich texture and consistency. Plus, Turbinado sugar isn't processed so it doesn't contain anything artificial. This sets Tropical Smoothie Cafe apart from many of its competitors who do use artificial sugar or syrups in their smoothies.

Of course many folks ask for Splenda, and some prefer no sweetener at all. Either way, you're getting an affordable and fulfilling treat you don't have to feel guilty about.

  1. Why isn't Turbinado added to the list of ingredients on the site?

  2. Aren't Americans already getting enough sugar with this ovesity epidemic we have? Why add more sugar? Why? Your customers are so uneducated in nutrition and you are preying on this.

    1. Yes. But it tastes so much better with more sugar. Sex, violence and carbs - sell.

  3. The blog entry does NOT answer the question originally posed. Big majority of brown sugar on the market is prepared from refined white sugar by adding back some of the dirt removed during a preceding step of purification.
Even the thick, brown and sticky (whole) raw sugar has no measurable health benefits over white sugar. Read the recent study on sugar, HFCS and honey, all exert the same unfavoroble effects.

  6. The fact that tropical smoothie adds sugar is the reason I will no longer go there. It's way too sweet. Of course I could ask them not to but I'll just make my own. A fruit smoothie doesn't need any sugar. If people want it sweeter , they can ask for it. It shouldnt be the other way around where you have to ask for no sugar.

    1. Well said...its corporate greed and it's wrong. You think youre consuming a healthy alternative to an ice cream shake but its loaded with extra sugar anyway. Optional is fine but don't include it by default and practically sneak it in. Also - stop calling it turbinado which many people don't realize is just sugar and won't to ask. Just list as "sugar".

  8. Um, no. It's ABSURD to add sugar to an all or mostly fruit smoothie. Sorry, don't need the "texture and consistency". Sure add sweetener to limeade, but no not NO need to add sugar or Splenda to a mango, banana, strawberry smoothie! Come on, I'm annoyed that sugar is not listed in the ingredients. Don't need it, don't want it! Call it sugar not TURBINADO, and see how much your company will save in ingredient costs by not having to add it to smoothies for those of us who shrug and wonder "WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?"!

  9. I was excited to try Tropical Smoothie. I loved the one I chose. However, I'm diabetic and thought I was getting a whole foods smoothie, which to me is no added ingredients (like sugar). Needless to say it raised my blood sugar levels a lot. I am disappointed in them for not listing this as an additive to their smoothies as it should be. I will be returning and requesting no sugar, but am concerned that the one making my smoothie will not get it right. I can't afford a mess up.
